Hi. New here. I have a bunch of guitar amp projects on a shelf that I may have time to get to soon. I just wanted to get opinions on what this thing might be good for, converted?
It's a HUGE 1964 Silvertone 7407 tube receiever with matching 7429 speakers.
A friend who reburbs classic SS receivers got in an a bundle and didn't want it, so he gave it to me free. I told him those old Silvertones MAY have some good old AlNiCo speakers in them, but he didn't care, he just wanted rid of this monster.
I had thought about removing the amp section, since it's in its own chassis, building a preamp and cab for it, and using it as a guitar amp, either stereo or both inputs same signal in, ~20W range.
I guess I could still do something like that, but then I opened the speakers and found all those Jensen AlNiCo speakers.
10" Jensen Special Design woofer P10RJF (C7927); code 220422 (May 1964).
8" (odd closed-back) Jensen Concert HiFi midrange M808 07757(?); 220420 (April 1964)
3-1/2" Jensen Special Design P35-VAH (C7585-2); 220418 (April 1964).
It occurred to me that with a proper preamp, this might be able to be turned into a nice little acoustic guitar amp?
The P10R Jensen is odd in that it has a brown surround, which I can only guess might be less-stiff than a regular P10R to provide a bit more bass for stereo use, per Sears' spec? Which may make it less-desirable for electric guitar, but more useful for acoustic (unless replacing the surround with a traditional one)?
The sealed-back 8" one is also intriguing. I wonder if they did that to project it all forward, and to keep any of the 10" bass from interfering?
Scant information exists online about those particular speakers. I saw one instance of the 10" ones for sale, and a mention somewhere of the 8' one, but that's about it. No specs or anything.
I figured for free, it might be worth entertaining ideas to use it for something other than a gigantic receiver?
Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.
Thanks,
TSP

Looks like a fun project. I did a quick google and came up with a schematic and some info:

There's a link to a drop-box schematic of the power amp section.
Sears basically took a console stereo tuner and amp chassis and stuck them together in a table-top enclosure. They are constructed with point-to-point wiring in the amp, and I think a circuit board in the tuner.
The power amp is stereo, with 2x EL84/6BQ5 per channel and each channel has a single 12AX7 as a pre-amp and a phase-inverter. I'd guess around 10 watts per channel.
I'd bet the tubes are nice quality USA or European tubes from the 60's.
And I'd snag the knobs, as they're used on the Silvertone guitar amps too. (Sear's own aesthetic).
The speakers as you found, are not guitar speakers. I don't know if they're recone-able to guitar use or not. Jensen didn't just make guitar speakers back in the day.
I think you could put the power amp chassis to good use. Maybe build a nice stereo guitar amp out of it. I think better for electric guitar. Acoustic amplifier, you'd probably want lots of clean power and headroom.

Re: 1964 Silvertone tube receiver and speakers to guitar amp?
Thanks for the reply. That page is helpful. I bookmarked and copied some stuff. I just got this recently, and was pondering what to do with it. I was hoping to find some good electric guitar speakers in there, but not quite sure how these funky P10R ones would sound. I assume they'll have different frequency characteristics than normal ones that might make them too flubby for electric. I may just disconnect the mid and tweeter and connect the P10R to the Blues Jr., Vibrochamp and/or or Univox U45B to see how they sound. Then, just for the heck of it, connect the mid back up and see what that does? May still be flubby, but with sharp mids? May be interesting.
As for the amp, might be fun to have a stereo/dual mono electric guitar amp with a preamp with two inputs, one switchable for mono to both channels through # 1 input, or stereo through # 1 and # 2 inputs. Split a clean through #1 , and effects through # 2, outputs of stereo effects, etc. Or, just simplify to one input to both channels, which is only one set of preamp tubes, controls, etc.
This is just in the "Wonder what interesting things I could do with this stuff" phase.
And, know well about those knobs...which is the first thing that caught my attention. My first amp was a Silvertone 1482, which I foolishly traded in as a youth for a Kustom 200 because I wanted "MORE POWER"!
I have also had a couple of Danelectro amps with the same knobs.
Thanks
