Head, combo, and speaker cabinet makers

Post by Colossal »

Hello friends,

I used to work with Peter Mather for amp cabinetry. His build quality and attention to detail was impeccable and worth every penny. Alas, but he passed away some time back. It seems like there is a lot less choice these days. In the early days of building, I tried Stagecraft and Mojo only to be very dissapointed with their tolex work (peeling up after a month), bad corners, and other cosmetic and other build issues that should not have been an issue. I have not been back to Mojo since. Maybe they have improved given the expansion of their company over the last decade. Their prices certainly have increased.

Can anyone recommend another individual or small American company that can build cabinets like Peter Mather? I don't mind paying more for quality materials and workmanship. I need somebody I can send drawings to and that listens and cares (and communicates).

Thanks.

I'm also interested in what the responses will be. KC at guitar cabinets direct would do this for me, but last time I reached out I didn't get a response. I'm sure he is still great for what he offers on his website with the built in options, but probably doesn't have time for custom builds anymore.

Re Guitar Cabinets Direct, I've found that if the modification can be made to the standard cabinet, such as a different control cut-out, that's doable. I've only bought two cabs from them, but the experience was good both times.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Jeff Swanson, if he is still making cabinets. He is located in MA I believe.

I found his website, though I noticed the price page says 2008.

If you're looking for more or less standard classic cabs like for F, M, H, etc...

Reggie only sells on eBay, but his prices are fair IMO, but as the name implies he only sells uncovered cabs of mostly lightweight pine dovetailed construction. I can say that his workmanship is as good as any. He does a few hardwood cabs for Boogie, Matchless, etc. as well.

KW Cabs
Kurt Wyberanec

Not cheap but very high quality. Domestic and exotic woods as well as tolex. Great communication but be patient for responses. Very knowledgeable and enjoyable to speak with on the phone. Familiar with Dumble amp & speaker cabinets. If you couldn’t tell, happy customer here.

Mojo is OEM for practically every major manufacturer now. They have been for a long time. Not just cabinets, they build the amps too.

Thanks for all the responses, guys; very helpful! I really appreciate it. I have some good choices here. I had forgotten about Jeff Swanson. I remember him from back in the 18W days. KW's offerings look fantastic!

This is good to know as well. I was asking KC to build me Dumble style cabinets, which are not his "standard" offerings. But I believe he builds all of the cabinets for Taylor and Brandon now.

Nice to read the other options people mentioned as well.

Will Dyke at Armadillo Amp Works makes the best cabs I have come across. He is a one man show now, so you sometimes have a bit of lead time depending who is in line. He can do any models or custom work and does impeccable work. website: https://amprestoration.com/contact/

Another thumbs up for Jeff Swanson, I played an MGL50 half stack this weekend that he did the cabs for, impeccable work.

For anyone looking to diy their own cabs. The new desktop cnc machines out now do a great job.

I run a OneFinity cnc in my garage and it cuts blind finger joints so nicely its fun to watch it run!

I got someone to program code for Heads Combos 1x12 and 2x12 cabs and it knocks them out in no time!

The best part is I can pick my own wood. The pic below is a 1x12 getting cut with 3/4 in Baltic Birch.

Happy New Year!

I would be very interested in hearing more about this setup! I have the garage space for something like this and was going to get setup with table saws this summer for some cab builds, but would WAY rather leave it up to a CNC if I could.
