Bypass B+ filter caps with 1u poly??

Post by HiGain »

Subject says it all...

Has anyone experimented with bypassing the B+ filter caps with a low value polypro cap for the sake of reducing ESR?

Is this a bad idea?

Thanks for your help, again!

shouldn't hurt anything so why not try it out? I tried a 3uF(2x 1.5uF films) for the first stage filter in a 50W marshall, and it was interesting (sounded different from alu electrolytic). The AC signal current couples through the filter cap (as well as the cathode bypass cap), so it can have a direct impact on the sound.

Equivalent Series Resistance - no capacitor is perfect, they all have some resistance as well as capacitance.
