From time to time I am sad that most "modern" music does not appeal to me. So I end up listening to the music that I love from 15 years ago or more. Here is some of what still moves me.
Gino Vannelli - "Brother to Brother" and "Storm at Sunup"
David Sanborn - "As We Speak" and "Voyeur"
Larry Carlton - all the early stuff thru "On Solid Ground" - after that it's spotty. "Last Nite" best of all, "Sleepwalk" probably my favorite studio album of his.
Hellecasters - all 3 albums, but the first 2 more than the 3rd
Robben Ford - RF&TBL thru "Handful of Blues" - after that it's spotty. I really dig his album with Joe Diorio though!
Jing Chi - especially the 1st one
Wes Montgomery - nearly everything
Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue" is perhaps my single favorite album of all time
Lots of "radio" music from the 70's and early 80's - childhood through college
Lots of "southern rock" since I'm originally from South Carolina
Jeff Lorber Fusion - "Wizard Island" is a great album!

I was talking to a friend the other day about what kids are listening to these days.
It seems some of the more sophisticated kids are reaching back in Dad's CD or Vinyl rack and pulling out some good stuff from 20 or more years ago.
While the kids with big sub woofers like the gangsta rap because it has the most low bass.....

Have you tried FarmHouse from Phish? The song "Bug" is especially enlightening. The way these upper chords ring and chime is sooooo sweet. The droning riff of First Tube is very addictive with the time-shifting thing he does in there...
Firewire from Carlton: it's no longer the 70's but you might like...
(BTW, you just gave me another reason to go back to Brother to Brother, these songs ar *moving*, wild guitar as well)

Thanks. I have the Sco/Meth album already. I have not listened to Phish - I'll check them out. I also have "Firewire" - it's better than some of his other recent work, but nowhere near up to the level of the early stuff IMHO - the songs just aren't as strong.

A few good ones, not strictly guitar driven:
Chris Thile/Punch Brothers - One of my favorites, incredible mandolin player. He has a lot of solo material, and has played with lots of other greats like Edgar Meyer, Mark O'Connor, Bela Fleck, etc.
The Bad Plus - sort of a "punky" jazz trio, although totally unique in their own right.
Aaron Goldberg - Piano player for Josh Redman, check out his solo release "Worlds"
Kurt Rosenwinkel - Probably my favorite up and coming jazz guitarist. Absolutely sick player with wonderful taste.
Oso Closo - Rock band made up of jazz players from the University of North Texas. You HAVE to check them out, they are INCREDIBLE! No joke. Recently released their second album, "Today Is Beauty's Birthday," which is where you should start. Their first album, "Rest," is good too, but their sophomore effort outshines it.
Tommy Emmanuel - I think he's been mentioned plenty of times here already, but he's so good that if you haven't checked him out yet, you need to.
Wilco - Indie rock band from Chicago that has recently gained mainstream success. I would personally start with their live album "Kicking Television"
