One thing that keeps getting lost in translation though is access to content of information available (calls, emails, etc).
Tracking numbers doesn't surprise me nor really alarm me very much.
I distinctly recall hearing about this before, at least in the last two years and there was no stink about it.
Digging into content though crosses the line.

Re: Not to be political
Government (NSA) is recording content and archiving it in a vast data center (built expressly for that purpose) outside of Bluffdale Utah. Archiving/recording is done without a warrant. NSA claims they are not listening/reading the communications, but holding it in the event a judge does provide a warrant in the future.Cygnus X1 wrote:One thing that keeps getting lost in translation though is access to content of information available (calls, emails, etc).

I currently work for a company that provides an SDK to people writing cell phone apps. The SDK allows them to track every click you make in all those "There's an app for that."
Then they do predictive analysis for their customers to help them decide what promotions to send to which customer. It's all Big Data. They may not know your name, but your phone number is definitely being profiled.
I previously worked for a company that had a Facebook casino app. Every time you click okay on one of those apps, you've just given every bit of information about yourself, as well as a list of your friends.
I might be one of the few humans on this planet that doesn't own a cell phone.
One way to battle it is to provide enough noise that you fall outside the max deviation. In other words, if your data doesn't fall within a trend, it gets thrown away.
Also, if you fuck with keywords, it produces more noise to sift through.

My cell imprint is also very small.
I use it as an emergency phone for the most part.
Tracphone, very cheap.

I misread it as "IKEA". I guess I don't have to hide my furniture after all.

Yes!!!!!! One term and out. And it should be illegal to serve and then become a lobbyist.NickC wrote:I agree with everything you wrote.Structo wrote: ....... I hope this isn't too political, if so I will retract it.
A man has to stand for something, some principles. Never apologize for that. Never retract what you believe is the Truth.
The Democrat party has changed a LOT. I used to be a member of that party. They betrayed me. The Republicans betrayed me. They both betrayed the Constitution. For that they are traitors and deserve to be tried in a court of law for their treason. I doubt that will ever happen. The next best thing is to vote them out of office. And NEVER let any of them stay in office long enough to become entrenched. One term and out. And make them live by the same laws they enact of us little people, retroactively.
Re: Not to be political
Political jobs should be low paying and unpleasant (like they were in the beginning) so only the truly civic minded will take them. They say we can't do that or we won't attract top talent. Sorry - these days, we're not getting any talent at all.

I used to see gibberish posts like that on newsgroups I use to frequent until the interweb took over.LeftyStrat wrote:

I always thought that they were coded messages to terrorists or something.
A well known privacy expert said the other day, the only way not to have your privacy invaded is to write the information on a piece of paper and hand it personally to the person you wish to communicate with and once read by the person, destroy the paper.
Or, encrypt everything you do on the internet.
People love those smart phones!
But, the reason they call them smart is because they they track everything you do.
From your current location, to all your texts, search engine queries and internet traffic.
I have mixed feelings about Snowden.
On one hand I am glad that we were told about the snooping going on.
Some call him a traitor because he leaked secure information.
I am not well enough informed to know what top secret information was leaked.
But, do we really believe that our enemies didn't know the NSA was tracking everything, everywhere?
All countries spy on each other.
I just hope that all these scandals that the current administration is involved with get fully investigated and the people responsible are brought to justice, no matter who it is.
I would say even say this if Mitt Romney was in the white house.
Wrong is wrong and the politicians should be held responsible, not swept under the rug or delaying things until the outrage has subsided a bit.
Tom
Don't let that smoke out!

Tom, I agree fully with you, although my feelings are that the above will never happen....Structo wrote: I just hope that all these scandals that the current administration is involved with get fully investigated and the people responsible are brought to justice, no matter who it is.

The gibberish is produced by the command 'spook' in the Emacs editor. It was created years ago and is constantly updated with words likely to be triggers for any surveillance program. The idea was that if every email had these triggers, it would render any kind of programmatic alerts completely worthless.
I've often wondered what it would be like to replace elections for the House of Representatives with random selection, like jury duty. It would produce a more representative cross section of society.
Some would say that it might put some crazies in office, but I believe it would be fewer than the current system.

sorry - been going on for decades...I first heard about the FBI requiring this of ma bell in 1992 - and then it was old news - they have been doing it ever since they can, and since we all decided to pay for it (without knowing).but holding it in the event a judge does provide a warrant in the future.
you are being watched.
its not paranoia - anymore.
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds

And on the cop shows, where they need to keep the perp on the line for a million years to "get the trace"? Total BS. It was 1982. I dropped my phone and was concerned the ringer was broken. So I called the operator to ask for a call back. She answered. I explained what happened, thenI said "let me give you my number". Her reply was: "no need, I have it right here in front of me". The call lasted all of 5 seconds. She called right back. I was stunned.

That would have to happen before the administration leaves office. Otherwise they will simply pass a law that they can not be prosecuted for anything they did while in office. It's a common practice.Structo wrote:
