Kinda crazy to me that with all that money that must be tied up in iron and output tubes to no have a fan or two on that!

The owner is a doom metal guitarist/bassist. He once appeared on The Great Race with his partner. Nice guy. He's replacing his old Earth Sound Research 4xKT88 head with this one. The HEX has a nice Master Volume, which makes the preamp distortion on this amp really sweet to play.

No fan! OTOH, the 6550s are biased at about 25% dissipation, 630v on plates and only 300v on screens, provided by the UL OT. So they're never going to run very hot.

I can’t get my head around that, it seems more like split rail pentode than UL?

I'm puzzled as well. How would a UL primary drop the screen voltage?

Love this amp and is my current project but in styling of Orange OR120 and a 300w more like this amp.

Build a few 150w versions still rocking my area (6550).

Looking at KT150 & KT170 tubes as well. Expensive!

The expense and mixed reviews on durability of KT-150's convinced me that multiple pairs/quads of '88's were the way to go.

Cool amp, looks as heavy as my old PS300.

The UL connection keeps the screen voltage lower than the plate voltage, which is much kinder to the screens than the typical fixed screen supply.
