What brand of capacitors are these?

Post by Dingleberry »

Hi.

Does anyone know what brand capacitors are these?
I assume they are polyester film hence the KT stamped on them.

They look like ERO/Erofols to me. Could be wrong.

You're right about them being polyester.

That ERO popped in my mind too. It was a mixed capacitor bag where these came from. If I remember correctly it was german origin so that could point towards ERO as well.
I planned to use these in my coming rocket type amp build.

I thought that first too when I got these. They really look like polystyrene/styroflex caps with the clear body and slightly red other end, but on the other hand that KT means polyester in "capacitor language".
And I don't think polystyrenes exist in that large values at least they are not very common.

Styroflex, and it seems ERO.

I really thought they were polyester. Hmmm, I wonder what the tonal difference is. I've not used many other types.

Thank you Roberto for the hint. Really appreciate your effort to investigate these. Don't want to sound like stubborn jackass moron's arse, but
I still kind of stick with the idea of them being polyester too, not polystyrene.
Never seen a real styrene with KT stamped on them.
I've got (dare I say plenty) quite of a stash of styrenes (most of them in the pf region) and they seem all to have very hard plastic outer surface, kind of molded in some hard plastic material. These seem to feel a little softer if you guys get what I mean.
Some ebay sellers just don't know what they are selling and some of them just tries to rip off cork sniffers and mojo wankers.

For example lots of ERO KT1800-series capacitors are sold in ebay as polystyrene "hi-end-hi-fi- ultimate audio grade-nos-vintage-obsolete-best upgrade you've ever heard"
capacitors.
They are just plain old European made polyester film caps, although very good sounding and high quality caps they are. The marketing BS just sometimes pisses me off and sometimes makes me laugh.

When I looked the other items the ebay the seller has it really looks that he has bought the same "mixed film capacitors" bag like me and is now selling them individually on ebay. Lots of same caps available as were in the assortment.

But what I am to say, maybe the seller knows better and they really are styrene caps. Better build my rocket and listen how it sounds.
And worth to mention,
I'm a really big fan of styrene caps, somehow I really like the sound of them over ceramics and micas. Been using them in nearly all of my amp builds. Silverface F's sound really nice with 300pf styrene treble caps. Articulate, but not harsh in any way.

I have some of those and am not sure about them yet, but pretty sure that they are not ERO.
Not certain, but I think they are from the DDR socialist production.

On a German forum I read some rather rude posts from some sniffers about them. The only criticism that stuck in my head was that the leads were kind of haphazardly placed inside. I need to cut a few open and see about that.

Polystyrene / polyester - really unsure there too.
I still need to try them out.

One not very conclusive post!

I would think those are polyester just from the markings ("KT" = polyester, "MKT" = metal. polyester, "KP" polypropylene, etc.). Also, not all transparent looking film caps are polystyrene (ex. the mylars in Thomas Organ wahs, also many much more recent Japanese mylar with transparent silver, yellow appearance), and besides that, if they were polystyrene, then should be "PS" (the polystyrene code if mem. serves) if they are marked according to a convention.
