magnatone varistor

Any know of an equivalent MOV that'll work in a magnatone vibro circuit?

Nope. There's a Magnatone-Valco group on Yahoo that I follow. Those guys say NO$ is the only source.

Yeah they are as rare as hens teeth.

Some enterprising amp tech should come up with an equivalent.

Martin?

Ha! It's about the materials used today vs. back then. Check the curves on the right here, and you'll see what the difference is. Modern ones are better for protecting circuits from surges, but they make lousy vibratos. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varistor

There was some guy that had a big stash, but he was charging something like $50 a set. Last I heard he was looking to unload the whole lot.

They are Extinct with only a couple of guys who hoarded a few up years ago having any. I see a couple on ebay every now and then but they are ridiculously expensive. I found Workman brand equivalent a few years ago (1 pair only) in an old Electronic store. I built me a standalone Rev and Magnatone style vibrato that is just great sounding. The Valco Magnatone yahoo group is the best source of info on those amps.

Wow. That's bad design to build based on the LIMITATIONS of a component. Do you guys think there's a way to rejigger it?

Take a look @ this thread: http://www.guitargear.net.au/discussion ... ic=29720.0

Looks like they found a semi-reasonable alternative. Exact characteristics? No, but the builder seemed to be pretty happy with the results. I just recently ordered some of these, but it'll be a spell before I get a chance to do anything with them: http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDet ... EjFA%3D%3D
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

So on the Magnatone amps that have these, they are only used in the vibrato circuit?

Is this is a true vibrato in that it causes actual pitch shift?

I wonder what the guy that builds the Tonemaster™ Troubador 214 Evil Robot amps uses for varistors?

You know the one that Phil X plays?

The Varisters in the old Maggies were copper varisters and no one that I know of makes the copper ones any more. In the 60s they were plentiful becaused they were used in TVs but when the TVs went solid state there was no need for them any more and the manufactureers quit makning them.
