my gateway drug
I guess I could blame my new found obsession with amps on pedals.

Some of my pedal builds
It has been a long time since I posted here, so I thought I would drop by and show a few of my latest projects. I am now using a pedal board where the majority of pedals are self-made. This below is a distortion pedal using red LEDs for diode clipping.
[img:408:640]http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s52 ... eovxv6.jpg[/img]
Below is a "Briggs Diamante" compressor (similar to the "Diamond" compressor).
Inside the shrink-wrap are an LED and light-detecting resistor coupling to cut the gain as the light gets brighter (hence giving you compression). This is actually the same method as the old LA2A studio compressor.
I also have a layout for guitar pedal version of that which sounds great.

Re: Effect Pedal building
However, I decided to build 3 of the Stew-Mac effect pedal kits and wow the easiest most well designed kit I have ever solder together.
Yes they sound great especially the JHS808 pedal and JHS low drive bass OD. The Proco-Rat pedal JHS All American is to buzzy for my likes but still good pedal.

Re: Effect Pedal building
I finally tried pedal building too this last week from a couple GGG kits.... kind of fun to have a project you can do in one evening.
I painted them with cheap nail polish... something I had around... I got a bunch about a decade ago from some friends helping me distinguish all my work keys from each other. Painted the heads of the keys.
Anyways, can get creative... not very precise, but it dries nice and fast! Can you tell what two circuits I did?

Klon Centaur?
Re: Effect Pedal building
Yup! I guess the "art" is not very subtle!
The Rat is based on some artwork from "The Secret of Nimh". I won't show you the picture it was inspired from, because then mine will look pretty horrible.

Re: Effect Pedal building
That's what I like about the rat... it's rough, but in a good way!
Re: Effect Pedal building
I didn't even see that Rat, he does look good.
Re: Effect Pedal building
Thanks Mark! Neither is a Monet, but you can tell that the Rat was done second; after I got my worst kindergarten painting skills out on the Centaur.
I do agree that the Rat is such a perfect name for that pedal... so ratty and nasty sounding... when other drive sounds are too smooth or pretty.
I also feel like the Klon Centaur is the most unsuitable name for the type of pedal it is. When I first heard of a Klon Centaur (several years ago), I assumed by the name that is was some sort of extreme heavy metal style pedal.

...only for use with really pointy guitars

Re: Effect Pedal building
Looking good, Mark. Definitely going for authentic looking with that one.
Any thoughts on how it sonically compares to other Klones or the originals?
I'm a bit curious how accurate my GGG version is. It's quite useable of a pedal for me, but no idea how it compares to the real thing.

Re: Effect Pedal building
I have a centura and a real klon. klons sound a touch fuller in the bass response to me. I think my centura, when it was working right might have been a little more distorted. I also think they all vary a bit and the centura is a great pedal. I have an archer too. All very similar
