Vintage Fender/ Forrest White recover -Any idea for Fabric?
I have an old 56 Fender Princeton "White Higher Fidelity" amp. It was stripped when I got it 20 years ago.
I have seen them covered in tweed but it just makes them lose their identity.
I covered it BADLY in white tolex.
Grey tolex would be great but I never found any.
Well just stripped it again and I want to do something closer to the original color.
I still have the blue grillcloth, logo, as well as the original back panels in the original grey/green lizard leopard wallpaper suitcase linen.
I have some grey canvas from Sunbrella that's tough but not green enough.
I may experiment with spray lacquer. Maybe put a seal on it before covering the wood ? After too maybe with some tint ? Sounds complicated though.
Just polling for an alternative fabric.

Contact Adam at Satellite Amps as he now owns the rights to White and has the proper tolex.
Eardrums!!! We don't need no stinkin' eardrums!

I'll see if i can find the website if you are serious about having it restored to NOS I know of a company that custom makes fabics. the entire existance of the company is to make one off no longer in production grill cloth and fabric. I've used them to fix a few old radio's that had centimental value. They are not cheap but they do a perfect job.

This is what the stuff looks like. There are few words that would explain it.
The plain grey canvas is behind it.

You can use anything with a cotton back, just start cruising fabric stores.

When you find something close the maddening hunt will begin. It gnawed at
me even when I was doing something that had nothing to do with amps.
Every year the vinyl/Tolex patterns change at some of my surplus fabric stores. I doubt you'll ever see anything like those vintage fabrics but you
might find something close.
Check the stock at an old upholstery store in your area or a nearby major
city too. More than a few of those old timers have been very helpful and
willing to part with some of their treasured stash.

There can be a certain liberty to the hunt too...
An acceptable appearance might be better to your eye and still be very different
than what your first impressions where of the material you started off to find.
Unless the "perfect" material jumps up to greet you

I have seen some of the wall coverings in hospitals and businesses have very unigue designs and appealing.
I stopped and talked to one wall hanger specialist in the hallway one day and he said that the material could be use to wrap the wood cabinet no problem.
What do you people thing about that?
Also, my broken umbrella on my deck has what appears to be the same material the Xits amps are wrapped in.

Just like a paisley or flower pot Fender, a JEM, or any of the other paper finish things.
I love the Xits coverings. The amps.. ehh.. ok fine. I love that silver though.
I had a Marshall covered in real aligator, with the front panel having about 2 inches of belly on each end, and a few strats covered in single pieces of huge python, with stitched leather backs. I knew that snake when he was still eating families of bunnies. Kinda creepy? Nah..
