22nF vs. 47nF in a Blackface style tone stack

Post by pula58 »

I put in a switch so that I could switch back and forth between 22nF mid cap and 47nF mid cap (in my home-made AB763 style amp). I used my Strat to check it out.

I am aware that all the BF fenders used 47nF except for the Super Reverb. I don't know why, but my guitar always sounds great plugging into a SR. Could this be why?

Anyhow, I have been flipping back and forth and I have to say that, for a Strat, the 22nF sounds fatter, and possibly better. But, this is in the living room, I haven't tested it out playing live yet.

What do you folks think about this?

I concur.

.047 is the "norm", but there is some fun to be had in the different values.
.022 sounds nice and a bit more brawny.
.015 is a wallop and is big sounding for single coils.

On the bass cap, you can trim some bass extension by going to a .047 or .022 for the bass cap.

In Aspen Pitman's book, there is a paragraph from Ken Fischer extolling a .022/.022 combo for the AB763

I drew this up quite some time ago and have never installed the idea. But it uses two DPDT mini-toggles to get quite a few different tone stack value combinations.

For BFs, amps intended for 10" speakers often had a 22nF mid cap, amps with 12s tended to have a 47nF mid cap.
As they're 2 channel amps, it can be useful to have it different on each channel.

I played with that cap in my D build and ended up keeping a .033 in the mid

I ocassionally lower the .1uf in the blackface tonestack to .047 or .033 to get tighter bass

I too thought .033 was the best for my Fender.
