What happened to .033uF/400V caps?

Post by Omar »

Why can't I find any .033uF/400 caps in Mallory 150's, Orange Drop's, or Sozo's? I remember about five years ago they seemed to disappear from production but never heard the reason why. I'm guessing they didn't sell well?

Don't know if it helps any, but you can still get OD PS series in 600V from Antique Electronics. I don't know if it's fact, but I've heard they are the same as Mallory PVCs.

I don't think there are many amps with 33nFs in. I can only think of one BF Fender that has a 33nF in the tone stack instead of the usual 47nF.

FWIW, 33nF/400V is still available in the 'Ero' branded Vishay polyester axials (same type Marshall uses in the hand-wired reissue amps - looks like a paler yellow Mallory 150).

You can also get them in 'no-name' polyester OD-lookalikes.

You can probably find that value in Mullard Mustard caps on eBay...

It has been stated in more than a few places that you need to double or half a value to "hear" a difference. .01-.022-.047-0.1 seem to be common. Unless a amp manufaturer gets some great deal on them, they probably would not use them. I think lack of sales buried them.

That would also explain why there's such a glut of 3n9F, 6n8F, and 68nF caps on the surplus market. They made a jillion of 'em, and 40 years later they're still unloved and unwanted.

Check out www.justradios.com; they have those values but they aren't the "name brand" caps.

You can always connect caps in parallell. 22nF+10nF gives 32nF. Given that most caps are +/-10% tolerance on value you end up pretty close to nominal 33nF.

Or, why not experiment with different cap technologies in parallell?

For example:

22nF metalized poly
10nF metal foil poly
1nF ceramic

for that particular value of 33nF

There may be some tonal advantages hiding in this.
