dryer heating element as a dummy load ??

Post by Andy Le Blanc »

what you think?

a universal is rated to 5200w at 220-250v, so thats around 10kw at 110v

and the resistance cold is 10r...

Or taking the 5200W at an average 235VAC, that's 22 Ohms at full operating temperature. You'd probably have to parallel a couple of them. Making measurements might be a problem with the resistance floating around, but maybe if all you want to do is soak up power it'd be ok.

The resistance will not change as you barely have enough power to warm them up. A 1500W hair dryer or space heater should have about 9.7 ohms.

Great idea Andy. Easier than wiring up a bank of ceramic resistors.

I use a 4 ohm and 8 ohm resistor attached to a board with barrier strip for the wiring and two 1/4 jacks for a dummy load.

their less than $10 or free for scrounge, 22r hot?, you could rig a whole house current limiter with a few of them.

Interesting thoughts to entertain, I have couple a 300w 8r wire wound ohmite's I series parallel for power testing.

I see discarded old electric dryers quit often, the element has an insulated holder
and looks like one might be able to simply short or shorten the element to maybe get a fairly precise resistance

Great idea for the McGyver Amp Load. Price is right too. You could arrange the elements in an old toaster oven shell and make toast from the radiant waste heat while you are loading an amp!

I recently got one of these.

I mounted it on a thick piece of aluminum to heat sink it better.

I haven't tried it yet as a dummy load but I'm sure it will work fine.

They make a 200w one as well.

That's where I got my resistors from Tom but I couldn't remember so I posted the Weber link above showing the same resistors but slightly higher price. :)

Also look at toaster ovens too

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I stumbled upon it via the googletubes.

Unfortunately, the 100W resistors wont work for me. Ill be testing anywhere from 4 ohms to 1 ohm, up to maybe 10KW of power max.

So, i think maybe electric heat strips from furnaces would work.

10 kilowatts? This is an audio amp? What are you up to?

I use 2 of these for either 8 ohm/300W or 4 ohm/600W
