Re: Dumble Kitty Hawk for sale on Reverb
I'm reading the reverb post and it explains they're built by dumble on the boards, but assembled in germany by kitty hawk, sounds interesting, can someone confirm?
Here's his text:
Here's his text:
Here is an rare opportunity to buy an Kitty Hawk - Dumble mad in the very early 80th.
The boards in the amp was made by Alexander Dumble, only the transformators, the chassie and the cabinet was made by Kitty Hawk in Germany.
So this is as close as you can get to an original USA Dumble, without spending to much money.
I guess Kitty Hawk made around 20 Amps of these. I know and owned 6 Amps of it.
Most of them were modified with Reverb or further Switch for Rock/Jazz......
It has the serial no. 006
This one is untouched. I bought it from the secound owner, how did not play guitar for 28 Years, so the amp was 28 years in his house and were not used.
And what should I say, the amp sounds great. clean like a Fender and the lead sound is what I know as the Dumble tone.
Kitty Hawk (earlier Acoustic Supply) imported Mesa Boogie and Dumble amps to Europe in the late 70th / early 80th. Dumble send Chassies and Boards without Trafos to Germany to save Transport costs. Kitty Hawk made the rest. Kitty Hawk has got a lot of spare parts to repair Amp in Europe. After Dumble stopped selling contract with Kitty Hawk, they build these Amps of the spare parts they had.
I put the amp into an original Mahagonie Top, so you can use the best Cabinet with it.
If you buy the amp and collect it, you will get the original Black Cabinet too.
The Mahagonie Cabinet in Piture two is not for sale. It belongs to another Amp of mine.
I sold the last one to the UK and I found it on Rever for more than 23000 Euro.
And the amp was modified!
This one is all original!!!!! Untouched solders. The Last Picture shows the original Cabinet with an Celestion Speaker. The combination does notsound perfekt. It's much better with another Cabinet.
(The output transformer and the power transformer are for 230 Volt and made in Europe. They have no codes. )
Until than the Amp stands save im my recoring studio

Re: Dumble Kitty Hawk for sale on Reverb
It's not made by Dumble, the boards were made by Kitty Hawk, so is the entire amp.
Looking at the wiring I doubt it is good sounding: grid, cathode and plate wiring touching the heater wiring that's a good receipe to kill your tone.

Re: Dumble Kitty Hawk for sale on Reverb
It is a mix up of the Applied Acoustics story with the Kitty Hawk story.
Applied Acoustics: imported Dumble amps in 70-ies without cabs.
Kitty Hawk: copied the imported Dumble amps.
I believe both companies were run by the Roy brothers.
Summary:
If I got boards from Dumble, I still have to populate them with parts and having it built complete it doesn't make it a Dumble amp...

Understandable. Do you think this should move from the files section to the discussion section since it's not a dumble?erwin_ve wrote: ↑Thu Apr 26, 2018 6:34 am It is a mix up of the Applied Acoustics story with the Kitty Hawk story.

Yeah I think so Phil. It is a interesting amp from a historic viewpoint, there are obvious differences in building choices compared to real Dumble's from that generation.

Re: Dumble Kitty Hawk for sale on Reverb
I seemed to recall reading a while back that these amps were part of the reason Dumble started covering his amps' preamp sections in that goop material. Can anyone confirm this or has any more info on that? I'm kind of curious as to when he started doing that.

Re: Dumble Kitty Hawk for sale on Reverb
Clearly a Clone!
Problems with the boards and layout are
1 No MF's on PI plates
2 No stress relief holes?
3 Resistor types (No CF's in the signal path)
4 The boards do not appear to be double layered (including side walls)
5 Ceramic treble cap
Other problems I see are
No James on bass pot.
Lead dress(Twisted OPT primary wires ) among others
The board on the back I am not sure if this some kind of PS for the relays or a DC supply for the filaments (could be why he did not twist the heater wires)
If it was DC Fil,why was that added?
As far as this statement he posted goes? "The boards in the amp was made by Alexander Dumble"
let's say? I have some serious doubts!
BTW.The orientation of the bass cap is backwards
My .02 Cents
Tony

Re: Dumble Kitty Hawk for sale on Reverb
Here we go again: I have posted my memories about the Roy brothers several times. I bought my personal OD 50 in 1979 and visited their shop a number of times. As far as I know, Ervin is correct, the Roy brothers imported a number of Dumbles (estimated 20-30 amps) between 1977 and 1980, most of them without cabs and tubes, some without transformers, built their own cabinets, and finished the amps for sale. Then they started making clones, such as this one. A friend of mine used to own one of these, called the "Kitty Hawk Standard", decent sounding amp, but not the real thing, as far as I remember, quite a bit darker sounding than the real deal. Just my .02 (euro) cents Marcos

If anyone is interested here are a few more shots
BTW.Marcos is this the same amp do you know?

Re: Dumble Kitty Hawk for sale on Reverb
Tony, sorry for the late reply, I was busy with other affairs....No, this is not the amp I played, it was a 1x12 combo in a hardwood cab, with a EVM 12 inch speaker. AFAIK it is still somewhere in my vicinity, i.e. southern Germany. Sold for 800 DM then (late 90s) , appr. 400 USD
