ANother Express

Post by Blues Hound »

Well it has been five years since I built an express, so decided to build another one, the first one is on loan to an old friend who lives in NH.

Used the Weber WOT45LHR OT and running KT66's.

This is one loud amp but is very different sounding then the first one I built.

Here are some pictures.

Congrats on your build
like to hear more about the differences between 66's and 34's
when possible.

I'm also curious how much of the tonal diff between your last one and this one is attrib. to the 34 vs. 66, and what you like (or don't).

Be sure your tinfoil hat has a good low impedance ground.

There will be diferences also considering the OT. He used a Weber OT instead of the pacific.

The biggest difference is that it is very clean, not as much breakup...but I have not had a chance to really push it yet.

Very particular about V1 tube...as usual.

I am hoping it will be somewhere between the TWE and a JTM 45, more to come after I can play it at volume.

Well, I have had a little time to spend with the amp...here is what I have found out:

1. Have to use 5751 in V1, 12AU7 in V2 and a 12AT7 in V3 in order to control the feedback. With the LP you can use the vol to control the gain, neck is very clean at 1 to 5, bridge is overdriven at 4+.

2. KT66 are nice, but EL34's and 6V6's sound better, really liking the 6V6's.

3. Much louder then what I remembered.

Need to build it a home now.

Steve, thanks for posting this. I've been curious about KT-66 tubes in an Express amp. I really like them in a Rockster build but have never heard them in an Express.

RJ,

No problem...I will be getting in touch with for a PT and OT for the Rocket I plan on building.

The KT66's are very loud...very loud...this build seems to be less stable as it is unruly with 12AX7's in V1 or V2.

Well after a couple of months of use with the Weber WOT45LHR OT and KT66's, decided to put a Heyboer express OT in the amp.

I must say, the difference is remarkable.

The Weber WOT45LHR OT sounded very good, but not on the same level as compared to the Heyboer OT.

The amp sounds amazing with the pair of Mullard fx2 EL34's, Mullard 12AX7's in V1 and V2, Telefunken long smooth plate for V3.

Swapped out the Volume pot for an older CTS from an 83' Concert I converted to a D Clone and must say there is a noticeable change with this too. With the Alpha pot the amp was loud at 8:30, now at that same position much less volume.

Got to play through it last week in a local studio, and WOW!!! great cleans, wonderful smooth overdriven tone...could not be happier.

Apparently I have a amp building problem, as I have now started on a TW Rocket...preamp board is complete and wired, along with the pots and tube sockets...have the OT and am waiting on the PT and choke...will start another thread when I get the remaining parts.

Do you know which Heyboer OT this was? I am curious if it was the old dual secondary or maybe the more modern 6.6K "vintage"?

OK Thanks. This is what Phil at Heyboer referred to as "The Vintage" version of the Wreck OT's. I have a couple of these around and I think they sound awesome...

They do, with either EL34'S OR 6V6'S...might change the bias for KT66'S and see how it does.
