One question, since I've never been around Kauri: does it have any distinctive tap tone? Would it make a good guitar wood?
I really can't say for sure.
The last Kauri cabinet that I posted pictures of had someone chime in with a guitar builder who uses it for guitar tops.
I don't remember who the builder was. Possibly someone who knows can chime in..
Larry, the cost you mentioned is in the ball park..
I recently (August) saw some kauri (back and sides) guitars made by New Zealand builder Laurie Williams. Some phots can be seen at: http://www.guitargal.com/williams.html
I sure got some nice wood.
I should have got you to build both then choose - nah
seriously I'm very happy with mine.
Sure is gorgeous though and as said it's
like a sunset over the ocean, wow.

Just as a warning, they are approximate-- the measurements don't all jive, but they are really good if you use them as a basic guide rather than a template per se.

look at langcaster.com
He builds strat type bodied guitars with it. I have used Kauri for a few projects. Finishing it is like putting a finish on a show car . Fabulous wood...
