Re: Carbon comp v carbon film, poly-which?

There's so many more factors here. Lead dress for one can change the entire charactor of an amp. It's really hard to say that the difference is a component selection, the wire type, or unobtainuim in the air. Component differences alone are significant. Quality/type of components, how well things a...

Re: Ceramic vs Silver Mica

I wish I knew. All I know is that parallel caps don't sound the same as a single cap of the same measured value If you do the research you will find that when you place two caps of the same material together that the signal will not pass through each cap identically or at the same time. Like other ...

Re: choke instead of resistor

It is overkill to use a chassis mounted aluminum body resistor here. Ok it does look good, but the reality is it drops so little voltage that a 1 watt will usually work and a 5 watt is well over the 20% tolerance factor. I like the 390 ohm value here and have never seen it drop more than 7 volts(it...

Re: choke instead of resistor

I'm still re-learing tube amp theory. Isn't the main purpose of a choke in a power supply to smooth the ripple even more after the filter caps? Essentially, yes. So this choke resistor is just a voltage dropping resistor or since it is wire wound does it have inductance properties? An inductor oppo...

Re: choke instead of resistor

What are the advantages of a choke instead of the resistor? Will it tighten up the bass response enough to make it worth while? I know it works on many other amps, but was wondering why it's not used on many D style amps? A choke offers better power supply regulation (some what similar to a voltage...

Re: One side red-plating

Yea Marshall says 90ma per side which I thought was nuts and sounded stiff to boot. I figured they were doing this for the clean channel as They recommend 80ma for the DSL. Setting the bias in the matter they recommend is less than ideal. They are several other methods/ways to give more headroom to...

Re: Lowering Noise and Microphonics

I just finished my Ceriatone build as well. I noticed how sensitive the v1 is. If you *breath* on it you hear it! LOL As I’m sure many are already aware the layout is critical with the Express circuit. If the input jack is too close the circuit board or the controls themselves are too close to the ...

Re: Anyone uses a switch turn remove the third gain stage?

Does anyone use a switch to be able to switch the third gain stage in and out of the circuit on a wreck type amp? I'm thinking about including one, for blues gigs... any thoughts on this! If an Express is set up properly (IE: right values and voltages) a player can lower the volume control on the g...

Re: Dan Fogelberg RIP

I don't know if you guys heard. Dan died yesterday of prostate cancer. That is a terrible way to go and given the time of year I'm sure it is hard on his family. Hopefully he is at peace not and the his family can find some comfort in that. Rest in peace Dan and thank you for the music you left us ...

Re: One side red-plating

The thing that motivated me me to build an amp was my Marshall TSL122, which sounds just slightly better than miserable even with totally expensive NOS. And now its got a new problem. After being on for about twenty minutes it red-plates on one side of the push-pull only. First time it happened I t...

Re: Help, Voltage problem in Power Section

It's got that glitchy oscillation kind of sound when you pick hard with it turned up a bit. I will try out the advice on locating the offending triode now. i will also mess around some with lead dress and see if I can get it to go away. A gentleman that lives close by has a TW kit from Nik and brou...

Re: Lowering the gain in my Wreck

I've got so much gain in my Wreck that I rarely go above 1:00 on the volume. What would I need to do to lower the gain slightly and achieve more clean headroom? There are numerous ways to do this and all will yield varying results, meaning they will all lower gain and increase headroom but at what ...

Re: Material for Turret Board

What should I take into consideration when choosing a material for my turret boards? It seems to me that it would not matter much since these are mainly passive components with audio applications, maybe just a thickness issue? What usually tends to hold up well over time is Garolite G10/FR4. While ...
