Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

Equivalent series inductance makes the impedance of a resistor plus ESL higher with frequency. The frequency where the inductive reactance equals the resistance is taken as the critical point of its filtering. The frequency were that happens is F = R / (2 * pi * L). I did a quick look for the self i...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

Not really. induction differences alone is enough to consider potential differences between brands . Can you describe what, exactly, you mean by "induction differences"? Is that magnetic? Inductive? I'll have to see what you call "induction differences" between brands. If you mean the magnetic indu...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

With all due respect, just because you don't hear any difference between components that does not mean that one does not exist and that the rest of us that do suffer from some delusion. I appreciate your approach. However - I never said there was no difference, or that people who hear component dif...

Re: PT reverse engineering problem

Try sticking a very mild load on the windings as you measure. Maybe something like a 10K across the meter leads. Your meter could be measuring stray capactively coupled voltage.

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

Yeah, I know, but the discussion has veered off a bit. There's only one realistic answer to the question. I'm just starting from first principles after reading a few of the preceding posts.

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

You know, I really thought this would taper off after the posting from the fellow who hears tonal differences from different AC line cords.

@ Whopperplate:
Do you accept that people can and have deceived themselves?

Try to keep it down to yes or no.

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

This is one of my favorite pics to demonstrate measurable differences exist between different dielectrics. Now, the hard part is quantifying that, and translating to how it will sound in a guitar amp. It's clear that one of these caps is superior if you're going for minimum THD, for something like ...

At some point, I think I'll just sit back and watch the show.

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

Percussive- articulate , strong pick attack , upper midrange characteristic. As bepone said , strong chicken picking OK. So: "Percussive" = "articulate" + "strong pick attack" + "upper midrange characteristic" Can you assign anything (1) repeatably (2) measurable to "articulate", "strong pick attac...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

interesting that you dont hear metal film vs carbon film differences in the sound, also polyester vs various polypropilene caps.. with so much experience. difference is huge. not on all positions the same.. And as I have said, interesting that you > do < hear them, especially for film resistors. Th...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

why not only using soldering iron? it is very difficult? I've been using a soldering iron since about 1966. I've been building my own audio equipment since then. My first self-built guitar amp was 1967. Never really stopped. That's not the issue. It's not as simple as "solder in some different comp...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

The big disconnect here is that people claim that they hear changes for which there is no good technical explanation. The technical aspects of components - their basic nature (e.g. resistance, capacitance, inductance), their parasitics (stray inductance, capacitance, leakage, ESR, dielectric absorpt...
