Grit with my grind

I've finished my amp and am experiencing a quality that I just don't like: The high treble frequencies sound really rough and not nearly as creamy and smooth as the mids and lower freq's. I thought that different types of treble tone caps may make a difference and was curious as to the types you guy...

Re: Biasing Question

I believe your tubes are too cold, meaning the bias current is too low and your bias voltage (B-) is too high (too negative). With the cathodes of your power tubes connected together, you are looking to get 40mv + 40mv = 80mv total across the cathode (1ohm) resistor. You need to change the bias supp...

Re: variable 3rd stage Rk?

My 2cents: I wired a 500K pot as a variable resistor in series after the coupling cap between stages 2 & 3. It acted somewhat like a master control, but introduced quite a bit of high frequency roll-off as I increased the resistance. I used a .01uf coupling cap there, so there was little effect on t...

Mid Control

What do you guys like better & why?
Wired as a variable resistor or like a pot?

Re: Headroom-or lack thereof..........

Whoops! In my previous post I ment 2nd stage instead of 3rd stage.
I'm using a 1meg audio taper pot, (Alpha or Mouser?)

Re: Headroom-or lack thereof..........

The circuit I built is 95% like John Kelly Brown's drawing. I like your idea of the variable split load on the stage 3 plate. I've heard that it doesn't affect the tone, just the gain structure. I may try a 5 postition switch there and then I can leave it there if I like it. Thanks for the suggestio...

Re: PI comparisons

Thanks for the input!! I used a perf-board without turrets, so it's not really easy to change out parts quickly. If I understand you correctly, the Liverpool PI doesn't have the gain that the Express PI has??? I really need to warm up the iron and try different values as you did and report my findin...

Headroom-or lack thereof..........

[size=18]My clone has no headroom. If I run the volume past 1, all I get is drive. The tone is wonderful, but the flexibility is not. I think what I'm missing is the ability to clean up the distortion from the guitar volume control. If I set the amp volume control for the "lead" level with the guita...

PI comparisons

What differences would one expect between the Express and Liverpool phase inverters? They seem to run at similar B+ voltages, but the tail and bias resistors are very different. What would happen if someone put the Liverpool values in the PI of an Express: less gain, +/- headroom? I'm very curious a...
