My latest product

This is the prototype of the latest from Activax. It's called the Coyote but I think the name will change, I don't know, maybe the Hornet? (suggestions would be appreciated) It's a twin EL84 that as a rather different tone system on it. I'm sure there's a name for it but it escapes me right now. Any...

Re: Skipping the PT?

Martin: I thought I remembered older equipment being wired so. I know that it easily posed a threat if a short occurred. But as you said, 3 prong cords have brought safety a long way. But still . . . T-Dude: After contemplating this awhile I believe I share your view. I think it's safer to be isolat...

Skipping the PT?

I've got a couple of 50B5 Pentodes pulled from an old mono Hi-Fi. I looked at the data sheet for them and saw they only require 120V or so on the plate. So I'm wondering, could you get away without using a PT? I mean, couldn't the AC from the wall be rectified, smoothed a bit and used as is? Of cour...

Re: 6L6 / 6V6 swapping?

Thanks guys. I did check out the current draw of 6Ls vs 6Vs and saw exactly what you're telling me. I'm not going to change his PT and ordered him a pair of JJ 6Vs.

Thanks again guys!

6L6 / 6V6 swapping?

I just got an old silver face Pinceton Reverb on my bench. Looked in the back and lo and behold, it has 6L6s in it! I checked it out and there have been no changes to the circuit so it's got me scratching my head. Am I that much of a noob? Can you simply swap 6V6s for 6L6s? I tried a pair of Vs and ...

Re: Screen Taps for 18 watters?

Thanks for the replies; I think a switch might be in order. I definitely want the amp to be overdriven, sometimes a lot. I've used the preamp in another of my designs, the Harlow, and it's got plenty of guts. So after reading up more on UL screen configs I may want to use it to clean up the tone a b...

Screen Taps for 18 watters?

Hello, I'm building a 2 x EL84 18 - 20 watt box. I will be using an Edcor CXPP25-8K OT. My question is will using the screen taps of the OT be Okay? Or should I have screen resistors off the HT? (PT=550v ON it's taps) I'm seeing a pretty wide range of of screen resistors and thought maybe just using...

Re: Output impedance tolerance?

Thanks, though I was hoping 12R was okay for an 8R output. But maybe there's a way to get a little under 8. I have 3 8R boxes that I can rig in parallel or series. I know it depends on the particular amp but generally speaking would 4R be to low for an 8R out? I heard somewhere once that a full step...

Output impedance tolerance?

I'm wondering if I can hook up a group of speakers to one or other of my amps. The best impedance I can get is 12 ohms. My amps mostly want to see 8R but a couple have 4R, 8R and 16R outs. So first of all, how far off can the amps tolerate? Secondly, is it better to go higher or lower in impedance i...

Re: New Harlow build

Sorry I've been away so long. Yes, Platinum/Blonde is a bright switch. It works as long as the Drive is not maxed, and good catch on the ceramic cap going to it. This amp sounds Great! I've already built two more. I'm using poplar for the cabs. It's kinda soft but is very easy to work and looks real...

New Harlow build

Hello, Haven't been around for awhile. Just wanted to share this, the first thing I've built in a couple of years. It's my design called "Harlow". It uses a 12AX7 and two NOS Russian 6BM8 tubes for the PP power and PI. There's an RCA 6X4 for the rectifier. I really love how this amp sounds. It's lou...
