Re: Writing the book....
What is lacking is information on how to tweak circuits and how they will then sound. This is a VERY subjective topic and very hard to analyze as well as document and display the data.. Most of this is done through empirical testing and trial and error and years of building all kinds of different t...

Re: Writing the book....
There are plenty of books that deal with how tubes and circuits work. What is lacking is information on how to tweak circuits and how they will then sound. Along the same lines would be how layout affects the sound. Info on how the output transformer affects the tone. Primary impedance, inductance, ...

Here's a link with some dissected caps including a vintage mustard. FWIW.

Here's the other link I was thinking about that also shows a Sozo taken apart.

Re: If SoZo was... Ken would have use it ?
The Sozo's are film amd foil. The 150's are metallized polyester. The leads on the Sozo's are much longer and thicker than the 150's. The physical size of the Sozo's is larger than the 150's even though the Sozo's are 400V and the 150's are 630V. I have taken apart a couple of Sozo's and they are wh...

Re: 1965 Pro Reverb: Driving me crazy!!!
So does the pop go away if you remove the 12AT7? Grounding the non-DC side of the cap also grounds the grid of the 12AT7. If you just unsolder that end of the cap do you get the pop?

Re: Why so little Gibson amps clones ?
I agree that there were soooo many different models and variations it's hard to say "Gibson Amp" and have that be meaningful on its own. They were never as standardized as Fender and Marshall. Some of them seem like science experiments. I envision the engineers having too many beers at lunch and the...

Re: Anyone tried the new Tung Sol 7581?
Haven't tried them in a D-Style amp but did just retube a VibroClone (Bandmaster Reverb head in a 15" combo) for a guy with them. Great headroom and sweet tone. I liked them and the owner was very happy.

Re: Fixed and cathode bias at the same time
I've done it in a couple of amps I've built. I just worked on a stereo Magnatone that was set up like that along with being ultralinear. No lack of harmonics in any of the amps mentioned. I say try it. You can always go back to one single bias method.

Did you build it with the compressor circuit? If so, does it do it with the compressor switched off?

Re: Mercury magnetic OT - dead on arival I think
Is this a Vox style OT? Does the primary have 4 wires? Some Vox OT's had two separate windings, one for each "side". Two wire need to be connected together to form the center tap. Get a hold of MM to get a proper wiring diagram before doing anything else.

Re: Jupiter Cap Quesiton
I've used the Jupiters and found them to be nothing special. Tested in the same amp that I built, I and the owner, preferred the Sozos. Just another man's opinion.......

Re: Gibson GA-100 Information
It was a Norelco. The one I worked on had the original speaker. Unfortunately it was damaged so I never got to hear it. The P12N I installed sounded great.
