Re: Maybe someone can help me with this color for a guitar.

I'm going to mildly disagree with Phil about grain filling. Maple is a closed-grain wood, and won't take filler. You should be able to use a stain, however. No issue here. Johnny: I am simply wrong -- didn't think about the properties of maple. Thanks for saying something and for being polite about...

Re: cabinet build - leaving space on each side of the chassis

You might look around for the golden ratio of a speaker enclosure. This is more typically a hi-fi topic for closed back. Nevertheless, it's useful reading. Assuming an open back combo, you get considerable latitude in the dimensions, but the golden ratio will give you a good starting point for somet...

Re: cabinet build - leaving space on each side of the chassis

You can make the box any size you want, but a wider box will require blocking to make a proper chassis cut out as xtian says. There are aesthetic considerations. For a combo, I'd say you want a ratio of about 3h:4w . For a head I think about 1:2.5 (something like 8"h x 20"w) is OK.

Re: Maybe someone can help me with this color for a guitar.

I'm not an expert, but that won't stop me. To me, that looks like a flamed maple top with a burst finish. The black stuff has to go over the burst. So, start with an ordinary burst. Paint it all yellow and blend in the brown-burst around the edge. The black stuff? I dunno. Cut a stencil? If the top ...

Re: Gibson GA-50 tone stack

You still have the bass pot grounded. That's a mistake. The bottom lug goes to the 2.2K and then the PI. That's not what my schematics show. That 2.2K is the PI cathode resistor and it connects to ground. Same for the ga50 and ga50T. Has nothing to do with the bass pot. Gibson is well known for mul...

I was unaware and asserted a view not supported by experience or evidence. I should not have said to skip the mic channel. Sorry and thanks for mentioning.

Re: Gibson GA-50 tone stack

Thank you for the kind words...I generally figure no one is paying attention to what I do. I'm not so sure about using a 6N7 in place of a 6SN7. The 6N7 has a higher plate resistance and twice the gain. I don't believe this is a good thing for a paraphase inverter. My primitive understanding and lim...

Re: Gibson GA-50 tone stack

This is from a GA-50T not GA-50. There is a big difference. Be certain of which amp. Lower pot is not grounded. Some things are not placed correctly. The 500K instrument pot gets input to wiper from J2-J4. The long wire going down doesn't belong there. Maybe this helps?

Re: What should I build?!?

It is impossible to know a person's wants and likes without more information. Also, your post demonstrates how differently one individual's idea can be different from another's. You say 50W or less, not too loud. I think 50W is really loud. So, where does that leave us in terms of helping you? I sug...

Re: Broken 5E3 for sale locally - worth checking out?

That price is ridiculous. You can buy a quality kit new for that price. Of course, that's no speaker and no cabinet. Still, buying someone else's problems for that price? You should pass or offer $250.

Re: Yet Another Two Stroke build

Ah, thank you. So when they say 7000K primary/4,8 ohm secondary, that's not actually correct, as it's 7000K to 8ohms, and 3500K to 4ohms.... That explains some of the things in Dave's book that weren't clear, like why you might want to plug an 8ohm speaker into the 4ohm secondary when you run a 6V6...

Re: Need help tweeking a schematic for 6k6 amp

You didn't say what you'd like to see for plate voltage on the 6K6's. Instead of the 325-0-325 PT, I might go down to 275-0-275. I didn't do any calculations, so this is a SWAG. There isn't that much difference between 6V6 and 6K6. Aside from the choice of PT, I'd probably build it as shown.
