Re: Different brands of potentiometers...sounds different???

I changed the Vib channel volume pot on my DR to a push-pull of the same value. Now the 2 channels have different volumes when set on the same number (below ~5.) Previously they were close. Different taper. Yes this is right, but the difference that I hear is not a difference in volume(tweaking the ...

Anyone know the winding pattern of a Dagnall/Marshall C3112

I have a defective dagnall OT from my 6100 anniversary head and I would rewind it with my winder on a new bobbin.I know that this is a more modern interleaved transformer (always with 1240 primary turns as the plexy transformer) but I don't know the proportion of the secondary windings. For example a...

Different brands of potentiometers...sounds different???

Hallo! I tried to compare some potentiometers used in old marshall (a superbass from '78) and 80's (a 4010 JCM800) with a classic modern Alpha taiwan (24mm,solder lugs, for 8mm mounting hole). I try this because the sound came out from an old Marshall amp is ALWAYS different than a handwired amp buil...

Re: Have You Ever Been Shocked Working On An Amp

I take 435 volt about one time each month ...... :D About one year ago I'm working on a H & K Triamp, and the loop circuits had some shielding problems.....(the sound traveled to power amp also with volume at 0,because the cables that go from preamp to effect loop board were not shielded) and I tried...

Re: bias and grid resistor power stage

Most amps use for the grid resistor in power amp,a "casual" value. This is due to the fact that some builders have a large quantity of "x value" resistors... :D The resistor,as said, reduce blocking distortion of power tubes when phase inverter drive the tubes hard.In modern Marshall amps, like JCM2000...

Re: Deluxe Reverb RI - Making Reverb Usable???

If you lower the 3.3M mix resistor you can make the amp overdrive more than stock circuit.I would try to leave the 3M3 resistor in place and put down the gain of the reverb recovery stage, lifting Ck on the cathode resistor. All the other mods are good

Re: 1N4007 vs. UF4007?

FT in my opinion sounds a bit more rounder and darker than LCR'S but are great caps!! It's always interesting how subjective tone can be as I do not hear F&T's as being dark. To my ears they sound very consistent and balanced but to each his own. I use ARS from arselectronics, the same that Marshall...

Re: 1N4007 vs. UF4007?

FT in my opinion sounds a bit more rounder and darker than LCR'S but are great caps!! I use ARS from arselectronics, the same that Marshall uses on handwired series,on 2203x,1987x ecc ecc.ARS are bright sounding but with the complex mid range and tight bass very similar to LCR.LCR are a bit (very few...

Re: 1N4007 vs. UF4007?

It's already clearly explained! Just a Polypropylene from B+ right after the diodes to ground, to the diode's minus side. And the same after the Stby again from B+ to ground. Larry Hallo Larry! :D Marshall uses a kind of this configuration on JCM/JTM60 range, and in JCM2000 DSL use a 1nF across each...

Re: Best coupling caps for a bf fender circuit

I once bought a bunch of 418p's from Dan Torres to upgrade my old Marshall 2203's coupling caps, once the caps were in my sound was ruined. Frank I know what you mean. I put some in my super reverb and the sound became sterile. It was harsh, colder, I didn't care for it at all. I put in the yellow ...

Re: Transformer impedence vs frequency

The transformer impedance actually varies with frequency, and add "colour" to the sound that came out from the speaker. The impedance of the primary, for example 1.7kohm ecc ecc is a math calculation that consider only turn ratio and sometimes some other few things. But luckily (not for all the people.....

Re: TAD 6L6GC-STR

I tried TAD 6L6WGC tubes. All these tubes seems made in China under TAD specs.... The power of these tubes is a bit low, early breakup and some compression. The tone is good but not in direct relation with the costs.... After 2 month 2 of them failed. The 6L6GC STR version should be another type of tub...

Re: New Sensor EL34 Mullard reissue rewievs??

There are TWO "Mullard" type reissues. The ones done by New Sensor (whom I assume own the name) which is a reproduction of the XF4 version of the Mullards (late production), single getter and The Groove Tubes GT-EL34-M which is a repro of the XF2, dual getter. The XF2 is the holy grail, so am kind ...

Re: JCM 800 with problems

Power tubes failed ??? When power tubes fail, occasionally redplating internally, due to internal short circuits or similar things;in these conditions the power of the amp go down because the power amp not run properly. This could explain your blowed fuses. If this is not the problem, could be bad conta...

Re: Other than Sprague Filters

I've used many brands of electrolytic caps for filtering---- Sprauge Atoms, Xicon, Illinois, Nichicon, Samwa, Tech-Cap, ARS, Cornell Dubiller, United Chemi-Con, F&T, JJ, Mallory computer grade cans, and some custom cans from Vibroworld for old Silvertone 1484/1485's----also the no-name axials from ...
