Re: Solid wire vs Stranded?
If you have ever had a solid conductor wire break from one too many flexes while building or working on an amp, you know what I'm talking about. Been there, done that...just this past week, in fact. There are definitely differences in working with stranded wire vs solid-core. Solid-core may be a pa...

Re: Eric Johnson's original Overdrive Special?
...So looks like Eric may have taken delivery around 1984 or early 85..I believe the SSS came shortly there after or perhaps Chris lent him a Dumbleland for the Tones sessions but I have no proof of this.. Maybe someone else knows.. Erics SSS was featured on the Tones tune "Off My Mind". Prominentl...

Re: Eric Johnson's original Overdrive Special?
Also, for clarification, Eric's primary lead setup (the one that would have occasionally been occupied by the Overdrive Special) used a '69 Super Bass with a Tube Driver (or sometimes an 808 Tube Screamer) and Echoplex (this Super Bass has since died and been replaced with various plexi's). The Fuz...

The Two-Rock Custom Clean is an exact copy of a SSS, its $6,000 new. The guy on Youtube had a Custom Clean with NOS parts, a 100w, and voiced like John Mayers silver panel SSS (The amp lived in Japan before John Mayer bought it). So it's a clone of John Mayers amp? I know Brandon does an early 100-...

The larger plate resistors (which sets the rails) generating a greater voltage drop across the resistor giving you a wider voltage swing in effect offering greater headroom... A larger plate load will increase the plate voltage swing for a given grid voltage swing, and so produce more gain. I would...

Re: why the higher plate loads on Dumbles?
Higher gain and greater touch-sensitivity are what you get. You also get less distortion (prior to clipping), which may also be a factor Dumble considered. I use high plate-loads sparingly as, although they exhibit greater gain and less distortion, what distortion they do retain is largely 3rd order...

Re: Odyssey Power Amp...
Looks to me like it's driving the power tubes off the plate, not the cathode, of the driver tube. Yes it is...and I suspect it (the 12BH7) is being driven by a 12AU7 PI. After pooring over the photos, it's basically a Twin Reverb output but with a PI/driver setup (like a Dumbleland) and a Master Vo...

Re: '70s EM-Arco caps same as '70s Sprague PS caps?
The old Sprague caps hold up very well. The impregnation formula was very proprietary, and I wouldn't trust other caps by other companies of that era to hold up as well. The Blue Molded Fender caps being an exception. The only other cap that seems to hold up is...yep, you guessed it...the EM-Arco ca...

Re: Dumbleland update (was SSS) :D
if the SSS does not use ultralinear taps, but run 500v into a 2k OT (ala Twin or SVT) doesn't this mean that its a 100w amp rather than a 150w amp? :? Depends on the output tubes. 6L6 SSS amps will be closer to 100W...6550 SSS amps will be closer to 150W. If the OT trannies chosen have the proper i...

Re: HAD on tubes vs solid state
Try injecting a 27th-order harmonic into your tone and see what it does for it. According to the Fourier modulation theorem nothing audible will happen. If I mix a 1kHz signal and a 27kHz signal, I will get sum and difference frequencies. This will result in a 26kHz and a 28kHz signal. Neither of w...

Re: HAD on tubes vs solid state
SS vs tubes...the oldest guitar amp debate on the net. In fact, as has been pointed out, the debate existed long before we even had a net. I think we need to focus on the word "survive". What does it mean for harmonics to survive? SS certainly does produce higher frequencies...and therefor, theoreti...
