Re: Benson Monarch

Hi Tom, Yeah you have it right. Arguably, you could put the snubber cap across the side of the tube that is exposed to the world outside of the chassis, so the first half of V1 and the return side of the reverb tube. I tend to just try them wherever the pre-amp is significantly amplifying a signal. ...

Re: Benson Monarch

This just popped up on Reddit... Nathan Junior.

Looks like the monarch reverb and pre-amp circuits mated to a single ended 6V6 with solid state rectifier. More data points for components and values. :D

Re: Framus mid control?

Yes I am very much worried about the simulator, not to mention Robrob's direction to put if right after the tweed controls, which should make it for an input impedance of order the mega Ohm. That is thousand times what you tried, which already is thousand times what the control seems to expect in o...

Re: Framus mid control?

Sorry guys, but with due respect (& I do mean it!) I insist that the name of this mid control should be no more associated with the word "tweed" in the same sentence, but to mention that it would cut treble very badly - when placed after a tweed-style tone controle - according to the online simulat...

Re: Stand alone reverb unit with a high impedance tank

Another cap coupled version, single tube... From the Benson monarch. Uses an 800 ohm tank, but folks have reported good results with 600ohm tanks as well.

Re: Benson Monarch

I also built the amp with vvr, no reverb circuit yet. Would it be possible to power scale the whole amp except for the 12dw7 tube, and get better reverb performance at heavy scaling? The short answer to that is maybe it can be done, but it's not worth the hassle. You have to split off the power sup...

Re: impressions/reactions

The JohnH attenuator https://www.marshallforum.com/threads/simple-attenuators-design-and-testing.98285/ mostly delivers on the reactive load promise. You can build one for a 100 watt load for the price of a dinner out if you are careful about sourcing parts. The biggest investment is reading through...

Re: Benson Monarch

First things first Mike, Is US mode with just the cap or the cap and resistor? I could never be sure of that but figured US was the brighter of the two options. Craig Good point. On the original amp, the US mode has the heavier bass of the two settings. The UK setting cuts the bass. This review on ...

Re: Benson Monarch

I'd replace the humbucker with a single coil. That would eliminate the need for more than one guitar :D Failing that, increasing your grid stopper values, or larger filter cap values maybe. Can you see what stage is the issue? When I was scoping around in there I saw that the PI is the first stage ...

Re: Benson Monarch

I changed the Split plate back to 10k/100k and it's definitely louder now, but I'm still not loving the output. I'm going to go back and look things over. Oh, and I forgot my decimal on the Reverb, it was .83V, not 83V. I did switch to 100K on the Reverb plate. It matches the newer guts shots of th...

Re: Benson Monarch

I re-did my build with the 5 filter caps/nodes. It's certainly way quieter on the hum side but now also way quieter overall. I can put the volume on max and the volume level matches the output of my Princeton Reverb around 3.5 I'd guess. Sound more lifeless vs when I first built it and had the reve...

Re: Benson Monarch

Funny how the D/C heaters just quietly went away. I think the one Aaron had on his bench had a fault with them. Craig There's a gut shot of a head (without reverb) for sale on Reverb too. Looks like 56K on the first plate. 5.6K on the split-load 2nd plate and there are 4 PS nodes. No labels, but ba...
