Thanks all.
Best way to discharge caps is through something unsuspecting such as a piggy bank:

Re: Power Supply
It might be a silly question then...
Why put a cap multiplier after sag resistors. Would that not make the time constant a wee bit too long?

New here
Joined recently. Goal is to motivate self enough to finish off some projects, and then start and finish a few more. I've gotten into tinkering with amps for all the wrong reasons. Basically, I'm not a musician, but a pulsed power engineer with a PhD in what amounts to giant filter circuits. Was work...

Re: Cap types for large cathode bypass values?
Have you checked out this calculator: https://www.ampbooks.com/mobile/amplifier-calculators/cathode-capacitor/ Great for basic sizing of caps. Regarding electrolitic vs film, there are various types of both which complicate matters. But to simplify the argument - film caps at low voltage are very li...

Re: POWER SOAK RECOMMENDATIONS
A low efficiency 10" speaker in a slightly oversized cabinet that's stuffed with absorbent fluff works pretty well at dropping a few dB. Aside from that using an L-pad works great if you like the tone. They can get close to good by tweaking a few amp settings. Not perfect, but the response curve of ...

Re: Speaker Break In and How to Do It Yourself
As long as there's plenty of displacement to keep a draft flowing over the voice coil and the wattage is much lower than the rating, then win. Aim for low enough frequency not to make much noise and not DC. Suspect 0.1 hz may be a tad on the low side. Have to many speakers and as yet failed to kill ...

Re: ADVISORY: Radial caps and electrocution danger
But, but, shudder... Electrolitic caps are inaccurate, leaky, explody beasts. While I've ended up using up to 12 in series, that was because they were free. Also, it wasn't 12 single caps in series. More 24 trays of 68 large capacitors for each of the 12 layers. It was an ancient physics experiment ...

Re: Power Supply
That circuit cannot work.. you need a voltage divider to ground to set the gate voltage.... Why resistors in series with the diodes??? If used they must be very low value.... Yep, also wondering what the circuit is for. But resistors in series with diodes can be useful, makes the on to off transiti...

Re: ADVISORY: Radial caps and electrocution danger
Good point. Not considered it as its not a thing in any of my amps. But good to be cautious of. Once while working on a pulsed power circuit, contentedly started to tweak it before realising it was turned on. Had 1kJ at 800V. Very carefully extracted hand from chassis, turned it off and went for a c...

Re: AC30C2 Choke..
Good idea. I have a choke kicking about too. Shall add it to the future mods for the amp. Here are the moods I've done so far: https://www.tdpri.com/threads/vox-ac30c2-mods.967333/ Planned future ones include a degree of power scaling and a switch to make it sound fatter (sometimes play bass through...

Re: Speaker Break In and How to Do It Yourself
Not to go too safety police with my first post in the forum. But do be careful if using a Variac to break in speakers. They're not isolation transformers an so can connect you directly to neutral or live. Neutral may sound safe, but I assure you it is not always, and 99% of the time isn't, well, the...
