Re: Problems with Rocket
Thanks a lot for your attention. Will post pictures as soon as I am able. Voltages are as follows: B+1 - 342v B+2 - 333v B+3 - 260v B+4 - 332v B+5 - 232v Voltage measured at the positive end of the cathode cap/resistor was 10.64v. I had forgotten to ground the 220k post-PI resistors. Fixed that prob...

Problems with Rocket
Hey folks, I recently finished a rocket build - on a platform that has seen numerous other forms - and ran into an apparent volume problem. At first switch-flick, the gain was maybe half of what it should have been (read: quiet and no distortion at all) and over a few minutes of playing and fiddling...

Re: 5881s in a Fender Twin
Thanks ALB, sounds simple enough. These are new GT special orders that the buyer never picked up. ~40 bucks -- I figure I can't go wrong and then I have another set of 6L6 lying around for whatever...

5881s in a Fender Twin
Hey everyone,
I have an 81/82 twin I'm currently overhauling and came across some 5881 tubes. Seems like an interesting adjustment, and the price is right. Has anyone done such a thing?

Re: 5AR4 alignment
Thank you for the replies. I installed the tube socket so that pins 1 and 2 would face the rear of the chassis. First test run went very well. There's an ongoing issue with fizzling out, but I'm hoping to cure that by replacing a couple resistors. Once again, thank you all.

5AR4 alignment
Hey all, I am working with a liverpool chassis and am looking to install a 5AR4. My question is related to how the tube is oriented with respect to the other components: all 9-pins are aligned such that pin 1 is facing the front of the chassis. Firstly, is the angle itself all that important? If it ...

Re: Ever build an amp that just doesn't have it?
Thanks! I actually looked up the TNT immediately after I posted last night. Great concept! I think that maybe adding that third gain stage is the way to go here, having done a couple more mods. Yesterday, I changed the 500K volume pot to 1M and what a difference that made. Although the tone control ...

Re: Ever build an amp that just doesn't have it?
Good stuff, man. Maybe this job needs another gain stage to get things kicking.
I'm not familiar with the two knob wreck. Have you got a schematic?

Re: Ever build an amp that just doesn't have it?
I believe somewhere that part of Ken Fisher's tweaking abilities was to listen to the amp what it wants to sound like. I understood this as the amp will not sound as intended if you try to mod it into something it doesn't want to be. Agreed. Seems like the type of characteristic that is akin to the...

Ever build an amp that just doesn't have it?
Hey all, This topic isn't so much a cry for help as a conversation starter. About a year ago I finished my first amp, which was an 18 watt TMB. I eventually added feedback/boost mods, cleaned up the lead dress, etc. and it turned out to be a great amp. Recently, I completed something of a hybrid: 4x...

Indeed. I thought it said rubycon on the caps in francesca. I could barely make it out. Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I'll give those other caps a try.

Re: My Second Express Build - In progress
Ah, my mistake. I was actually wondering about the 22uf/25v caps on the cathodes in the preamp. I remember now that you used a different type. I'm hoping to build an amp based off the Rocket and I'd like to use Mallorys throughout just for consistency. The Komet has them in there so I'm just gonna k...

Re: My Second Express Build - In progress
Hey Omar,
I was checkin out Allied for the Mallory caps and they don't seem to carry some of the electrolytics, namely the 22uf. How did you come by these for your build?

Re: My Second Express Build - In progress
Awesome! Thanks a lot. I think I might try to punch my own chassis for the next build. I figure if I acquire different skills in every build, it makes it a bit easier to rationalize spending >$500 for another amp
