Re: Gain stages in Marshall & Soldano amps
Well, the square wave being produced is the problem for a speaker. I've had some recent failures with a 50w SLO style amp and a 65w speaker. Granted the way it was being set was easily passing the 65w speaker power handling, and I'm surprised it lasted 9 months the way it was run before it fried. Th...

Re: Gain stages in Marshall & Soldano amps
Phil_S, there may be a thread, and I missed it. I just need a couple of questions answered about the 4 gain stage stacking and how much square wave it can produce. Speakers, yeah, I know a little. Gain stages...not so much. I never needed more than a Plexi and a wah or clean boost in front of it for...

Gain stages in Marshall & Soldano amps
Hey TAG members! I've got a couple of questions regarding gain stages in amps. I'll make it simple, since I'm a gain stage newbie. I've been told it's basically something like this. Marshall Plexi's = 2 gain stages Marshall JCM 800/DSL/etc = 3 gain stages Soldano SLO = 4 gain stages According to 2 a...

Re: Speaker attachment
You are going to want a frame on the front of your baffle board to raise the cloth away from it. If you put the cloth directly on the baffle, it will rattle and buzz. I made this mistake...once.

Re: Are 65 Amps still in business?
I understand through the grapevine that 65 Amps was bought by BAD, then the brand was "parked", or basically put on hold.

Re: single 12" speaker for 6V6 plexi
And I was surprised the guy from Scumback recommended the 65 watt version in fear that my 20 watt plexi could fire up a 25 watt. Maybe it could on a bad night. Or a too good night! Thanks again guys, Phil PJD3 The reason I recommended the 65w version is because my guess is your dual 6V6 amp is a pu...

Re: single 12" speaker for 6V6 plexi
Phil, There's very little difference between the H75-PVC 25w (Kraft paper voice coil) and the 65w (nomex heat treated voice coil) once they are broken in. I do 30 hours of break in here before they ship, so that's about 90-95% of the break in before it ships. Most clients hear no difference in tone,...

Re: single 12" speaker for 6V6 plexi
I had a client over to get speakers two weeks back, and he tried my dual 6V6 amp with an H75-PVC 65w Scumback and my LP replica (w/real PAF's). Within 30 seconds he had Zep's "Ramble On" dialed in and making me jealous. I told him he couldn't come back unless he showed me all the chords. I hate it w...

Re: METRO AMP KIT OPINIONS
Righteous. Looks like I’m going to want to read those instrucciones. The Avatar cab I’ve been trying all my Marshall builds with has a pair of mixed H and M Scumbacks. Killer tone, brother! I did the obsessive compulsive disorder/copying thing while building it. The instructions are in PDF format a...

Re: METRO AMP KIT OPINIONS
Wow, “same number of turns”, I’ve never heard that. Is that part of the “George Sauce”? Can’t argue with what I’ve heard on the interwebs! I’m feeling you on the novice level, brother. Everyone here has saved my bacon more than enough times already. These kits looked like they specified different p...

Re: METRO AMP KIT OPINIONS
I've built a few Marshall clone amps from the Metro kits. The instructions were clear, a five year old could build the amp from them (I fall into the category). I went with Mercury trannies, and George was kind enough to walk me through wiring up the OT since it wasn't a standard Mercury OT. I put N...

Re: What're you listening to right now??
I was just listening to one of my clients play "Ramble On" through my old Scumbag 9 watt amp using my LP replica with PAF's and a 68 Marshall straight cab with G12H30 55 & 75hz speakers. Jesus, I need to practice more, this guy had it all dialed within 30 seconds! It sucks to get old, and have a 30 ...

Re: borrowed a Hickok 752 - not sure whether to be happy with measurements or sorry I started measuring
I've got a Hickok 6000A. It had to be gone through, new VU meter, couple of new sockets, and then calibrated to be accurate and useful. Lucky there was a guy in Torrance, CA that specialized in this stuff, so it's all good now.

Re: I inherited this amp. Suggestions?
I inherited this from my father-in-law. Marshall JCM800 1982 anniversary series. I need to make sure when I fire this amp up, I am not destroying it or it's value. I can do the light bulb limiter thing, but if I do a cap job, will that diminish its value? Would sticking Solens in it hurt i's value?...
