Ian,
The big question is if you hear a difference with this amp now that is in the new chassis? Does it sound better or just "different"?
By the way, extremely clean and beautiful build (as usual). Definitely a reference build for me.

Re: NOS NTE metal film resistors
It would be great to have a list of dates and different suppliers for the NTE metal film resistors. I Imagin those are trade secrets that will never be released, but it would sure make it easier to find alternatives if we can't find the NTE packaged ones. Sorry Sergio about the new resistors. They d...

Re: Revisit High-Plate Classic with a 5-piece chassis
Beautiful build! Did you build a new board for the preamp? Looks pretty clean. Looks like you found a blue tantalum capacitor similar to what HAD used. Is that NOS or new stock?
Thanks,
Mike

Re: NOS NTE metal film resistors
As you can see, the new resistor (on the right) is very different internally than the NOS one. I'll let the experts decide if they suspect it is metal oxide or not, but it has less turns. One thing is for sure, the new resistors are not built the same as the NOS ones. As far as how they sound, my #1...

Re: NOS NTE metal film resistors
Thanks so much for everyone who is interested in this experiment. I was finally able to get to my local electronics store, but unfortunately, they only had one new set of resistors in the values we've been looking at. Here is a pic of the shiny NOS 200K resistors on the left and the new off the shel...

Re: NOS NTE metal film resistors
Ian, the one on the first one on the left is obviously darker and almost translucent. The second one from the left has a slightly different shade of color as does the one on the far right. Really, they were a lot closer than I expected. We'll see what the brand new one looks like when I get a hold o...

Re: NOS NTE metal film resistors
Before scraping. NTE metal film test 3.JPG After. NTE metal film test 4.JPG The paint/covering of the 430K, 180K, and 2.2K came off fairly easy. The rest of them were pretty tough. The 2.2K seems to have a slightly thinner lead. Having never seen the inside of a metal film before, I learned somethin...

Re: NOS NTE metal film resistors
Well, I chose some resistors and did some scraping. here they are in the packs. NTE metal film test 1.JPG NTE metal film test 2.JPG I tried to put them in what I think is their age timeline. The only ones I'm not sure about are the last two. The most resent ones are ROHS compliant like the 180K, but...

Re: NOS NTE metal film resistors
Bepone, Thanks for the instructions. I'll give that a try this weekend and report the results if I don't destroy them in the process.

Re: NOS NTE metal film resistors
Bepone, I have enough of these that I'd be willing to use for the test, and I can get a set of new ones at my local electronics store. Any Idea how to effectively remove the outer protection without destroying the inner metal film?

NOS NTE metal film resistors
I'm getting ready to build #183 and noticed a lot of discussion on the importance of using vintage resistors when possible. The question of whether the new NTE HW metal film resistors are the same as the old ones comes up now and then. It is clear that they are not the same, but since seeing is beli...

I started using these speakers when I heard that Dumble used them on his early amps. I bought several and they are by far the best speaker for clean that I have ever heard. I have a Blackface Fender Bassman and the cleans are luscious. I had a Twin Reverb with JBL D120's and the Altecs sounded much ...
