Re: Need help creating Bias Supply from HT

Place your 150K bias circuit drop resistor before the reverse diode to lower the voltage the diode sees. Even though the diodes are rated for 1000V, it'll be nicer. You can adjust the resistor value to arrive at the desired bias voltage. Doesn't matter. The current through any series string without...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

A side note for the perception-versus-measurments study. Diana Deutsch played tone intervals to a series of listeners, and asked whether the tones went up in the scale or down. Simple yes? Rising or falling note sequence. When the tones got further apart, she ran into the tri-tone paradox, and event...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

Throwing away your own experience because of someone one else’s preceding failure to perceive in differing contexts makes no sense to myself . The referenced hifi listening tests open up a certain plausibility that skeptics will lean on heavily , but as mentioned plausibility isn’t certainty ...and...

Hmmm. Sitting right next to a heat sink in a wire crowded chassis.

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

...If i were to take the poll now... I wondered too how many people might have changed their views after all the back and forth. I do know the answer to that one. :D I would be hugely surprised if anyone changed their views. Maybe a few newbies, maybe not. After a person accepts a certain belief, i...

Re: Output transformers

pdf64 is right about transformer power handling. It scales up and down with the lowest frequency it has to handle, until wire overheating comes into play. 10W down to 30z really does mean 20W at 60Hz and so on.

Re: PT reverse engineering problem

Condolences.

Loading the windings a little wasn't needed in the bad old days of analog meters, but today's meters have input impedances so high that they'll pick up stray voltages from anything.

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

You are right , running numbers with any familiar values does not yield results within the audio spectrum. I don’t refuse that sub sonic and hyper sonic frequencies cant modulate the audio spectrum. At the very least they can big an amp down and ruin idealized performance if too much gets inside . ...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

RG; is any type of resistor prone to inductance from magnetic fields in a tube amp(coming from other components? Yes. Anything that is conductive is affected by a changing external magnetic field; so all types of resistors, being conductors, can be affected by an external magnetic field. . Magnetic...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

Equivalent series inductance makes the impedance of a resistor plus ESL higher with frequency. The frequency where the inductive reactance equals the resistance is taken as the critical point of its filtering. The frequency were that happens is F = R / (2 * pi * L). I did a quick look for the self i...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

Not really. induction differences alone is enough to consider potential differences between brands . Can you describe what, exactly, you mean by "induction differences"? Is that magnetic? Inductive? I'll have to see what you call "induction differences" between brands. If you mean the magnetic indu...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

With all due respect, just because you don't hear any difference between components that does not mean that one does not exist and that the rest of us that do suffer from some delusion. I appreciate your approach. However - I never said there was no difference, or that people who hear component dif...
