Re: Lafayette PA conversion...
Hmmmm, wonder how the Dumble overdrive circuit would work in a 5b6 circuit in this amp,,,,,, Regan Not familiar with that one so I can't say, I built mine with a '50's jazz/blues tone in mind...but between the six tube sockets and huge chassis there are many possibilities. Use mine daily and like i...

Re: Tone caps - what voltage do they really see ?
Something I've noticed when checking plate voltages on V1 and V2 is that you can sometimes see close to full B+ voltage there when the amp is first powered up until the tubes warm up and start conducting (then the voltage quickly drops to design level) , this prompted me to switch a 200V coupling ca...

Re: converting Hammond ao63 into guitar amp
You could probably build a most excellent amp from it but it might be best to try a less challenging build first. I have an AO-68 myself in the pipeline and am probably going to go with an Ampeg build as the tube lineup is similar. What tubes does your amp have?? FWIW there is a sticky thread here o...

Re: Lafayette PA conversion...
Thanks Bill, I'm putting a gameplan together and hope to start it pretty quick! Lucky I have all the tubes needed,,,, as long as they test good! Regan Sounds good...BTW I was perusing schematics yesterday and saw that the stock Lafayette circuit is pretty similar to a Gibson GA-50, never did find a...

Re: raw aluminum for chassis and general fab
Thanks, Ken, and everyone! I'm not planning to build chassis, but want to have some sheet Al on hand for small jobs, like adding an output jack to an open-backed cabinet, or for control panels, etc. Our local metal supply place closed last year. I'll have to ask some contractors if there's any loca...

Re: Lafayette PA conversion...
Sounds like a really cool amp, might just copy you, lol!! I didn't think it was that old,, would have put it late 50's going by asthetics. I'll probably stay with 6l6, I haven't had a full octal amp before and excited to try. I like the idea of the pentode channel too, sounds like it would be a tas...

Re: Lafayette PA conversion...
Lol, unbelievable!!! I just searched for anything on one of these, feeling inspired after visiting David Root the other day and eyed up the lafayette on my shelf! I'm not sure what I'm going to build in mine, thinking maybe an early pro circuit. Good to know there is another one out there. I just l...

Lafayette PA conversion...
This had old Coke bottle 6L6's in it when I bought it but only a 5Y3 rectifer, so I decided to convert it to 6V6 and used some NOS RCA 6EY6's I had on hand. Changed the PI from a 6SC7 to a 6SL7 and that tube works fine in that position, no hum problems like they often have as V1, all 4 of mine sound...

Re: Ultimate Hammond Conversions thread
I had "hoped" to get this done by tonight's gig...alas, safety and the "honey-do" list got priority...but I did make some progress and hope to fire it up next week. So, I ended up doing a lot of the power string in P2P. It's just plain easier with the restricted space available. I didn't have a 3 w...

Re: push-pull to single-ended
Can I use a typical push-pull output transformer in a single-ended amp, if I use only 1/2 the primary? I have some AO-29 transformers here and want to build a single-ended 6v6. If yes, I have to double the speaker impedance, right? Does anyone have any practical experience doing this? I've done it ...

Re: project ideas 6l6s and octal pre-amp
If you end up liking the 6SJ7 pentode sound using one is relatively easy and the metal can is a BIG help in keeping noise and hum down...though FWIW pin 1 connects to the can and needs to be grounded, this is not noted on many schematics. I did some reading and listening myself tonight and am going ...

Nice work Mark. As for zip ties, I hate them! When you cut off the tail, they leave this little razor sharp pointy thing that is just waiting to slice a finger. get a pair of flush cut dykes - I like these: http://www.amazon.com/Xcelite-170M-General-Shearcutter-Diagonal/dp/B0002BBZIS that way you l...

Re: project ideas 6l6s and octal pre-amp
I recently built something similar from an old PA amp, went with a Gibson GA-20 (6SJ7, 6SL7, 2x 6V6, 5Y3) as that is the sort of tone I want...a 40's/50's jazz/blues sound and it does that very well. Anyway I used a 6SL7 for the PI and it works great, also stuck with point-to point wiring and really...

Re: SORRY
For some reason, when I post I keep getting an error, so I attempted to repost. I didn't realize the posts were succeeding. Sorry about that I get that all the time too, the error message implies that the post did not go but in fact it did....FWIW am using Chrome on a Mac. Anyway, hope your chassis...

Re: Ultimate Hammond Conversions thread
My L-series has 2 Heppner 12" in it, but I am certainly going to try them since they are alnico. One thing I have found after looking at (literally) dozens of speaks out of these, is that they never "doped" the edges of their cones for this application (at least I haven't seen it yet). So it's like...
