Re: Gnarly noise problem

I'm going to start it up in the am, and let it run all day, before I plug a signal in just to see if that's really "all" it is. Dang, that's gonna be a tragic loss...the last noisy one was a favorite for this amp! 12aT7WA blackplate military with extra support rods even! Makes me wonder if this isn'...

Re: Gnarly noise problem

Well it stopped cold on the PI tube. I put in another, also have the standby switch jumpered, but that alone made no diff (good suggestion though) so far she's quiet as a mouse. Much to my chagrin, that would mean that the PI tube (and the last replacement swap) are both bad. This one (tube #3 and F...

Re: Gathering input for big bottle rocket build

I'm going with reverb based on Kelly's comment. I can swing the Hammond choke- pm me if you have a better deal than the "usual guys" for it. Ya know like mouser, aes, digi, etc. always interested in good supplier sources. Lemme know on the other parts and I'll forego the screen choke for weight if n...

Re: Gathering input for big bottle rocket build

Rrrrgh! I just checked, and the choke I have here is the smaller one (they say 9H, 120mA, it actually measures at 7H tho). I see the one you are talking about. I have several pieces of iron lying about in a crate I will look and see if I have something suitable similar to the Fender choke. I can mea...

Re: Gnarly noise problem

Thanks Matt, see the attachment - yes its the coupler after 2nd stage. I think the plate R for third stage is 100K but that's from memory so ... what you're saying is: Check V2 pin 1 for stray DC. Would that show as spiking on my meter, or do I really need an O-scope for that??? Then I'll pull V2, a...

Re: Gnarly noise problem

OK I think maybe I am making progress. Today it's doing it STEADILY after replacing the .0022 cap and letting it warm up. I chopstuck all round the area of V1 and no change. So I pulled V1 and its STILL doing it.

So, now what? Pull V2 and see if it still doing it?

Re: Gathering input for big bottle rocket build

Thanks RJ, that combo cab is the bomb. Love the way it tilts by design. excellent for gigging as no handles are sticking out!

Re: Gathering input for big bottle rocket build

OK well I have a HUGE choke here in the parts, its about 22H and big enough for a 100w marshall so I am thinking at the very least, 200mA (its close to the size of the OT...prolly 300mA nyuk nyuk.) So, Matt H is that too high a value in H for this application? I also have a 158L which is about 14H a...

Re: Gnarly noise problem

Yes Dave, life isn't worth living unless one has enough hair pulling and swearing! Although I normally save THOSE for automotive jobs...lol. I will check the solder joints...all of them. For about the 12th time in 3 months. I must be missing just one yeah? And of course that's the "one that's bad".

Re: Gnarly noise problem

Stevem, not yet. Good idea! I have had this thing on all morning, and wish I could bill myself for shop hourly rate... So far the most activity and re activity is chopsticking right at the .0022 coupler and the cathode bypass cap for V1b...but I am resisting the urge yet to start swapping ...

Re: Gathering input for big bottle rocket build

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the input! Hoping to avoid mistakes (unlike my 6v6 fiasco). Kelly, my chassis is the standard wreck size 17x8x2.5 its unpunched so I can do whatever I want with layout. I do have a question, or pretty much the same clarification as JoeCon...Matt do you mean what he desc...

Re: Breaking more silence... the painful kind.

The BK for me, is what it is...no regrets I did it because my Bank refused (8 times) to even try to work out a plan on my house so we could keep it. If I were in your shoes, I'd consider what others have suggested about "getting the hell outta Dodge".

Re: Gnarly noise problem

Hahah! Maddening, in a sick, humorous way. It had been sitting there for a good ten hrs. I flipped on the ol' standby with the old analog meter hooked up to B+. And there went the noise.... No real change on the meter. But, I'm not necessarily trusting the meter...but suffice to say it didn't move s...

Gathering input for big bottle rocket build

Yep...I have an affliction. Over the last year I have been slowly collecting the parts for a "full power" Rocket using kt66. I got the iron/chassis off of the sale section, one piece at a time. Oddly, both the PT and OT are Heyboer's. I am planning to use a single board like KellyBass just did as I ...
